So as I plan my first garden Kate suggested I look at "square foot gardening". Square foot gardening is great for beginners as it allows you to grow a variety of vegetables and fruits in a small space. For those living in a city you can be trapped on the top of a building in the middle of a city during the zombie attack and still enjoy fresh produce. Two thumbs way up on that!!!!
The garden plots at our local community garden are the same size as a piece of plywood so therefore 8'x4'. I used http://vegetableplanner.vegetable-gardening-online.com/ to design how I will use this space to grow food. It is a really cool resource on this gardening technique. With it I was able to make the following garden plan.
I picked most of my vegetables based on their ability to re-grow next year without needing to be replanted, and others for ease of seed propagation. I won't be able to order out of a seed catalogue or pop in the van to go to the nearest garden centre with thousands of wandering zombies hungry for my brain. I just won't!

Zombies - The Most Realistic Reason Why Life As We Know It Will End!
If I am one of the first zombies I apologize, in advance, to those of you who I stalk and feast on. This will happen if the infection starts in rural Nova Scotia... unlikely! I have watched my fair share of zombie movies and TV shows and I know how it works..... New York, LA, or some obscure small town in Iowa are always the places where end of world scenarios begin. I will have plenty of time to bunker down.
If I make it through the first round, you know when we are still capturing and testing the infected looking for a vaccine, I will be putting into place my Zombie Attack Preparedness Training. As I do not wish to be alone as the human race pulls out of the ashes of zombie destruction I will share with you what I am working on so you too can be prepared.
Step one is for me to learn how to grow my own food. Truth be told I kill house plants and stick to hostas and bushes for landscaping so I am a little nervous. I have joined my local community garden, attended a food security meeting (where lots of expert gardeners have offered to assist us newbies), and have partnered up with my work mate Kate to help each other as we garden.
So if you think you could never feed yourself during a zombie apocalypse and would end up roaming the highways searching abandoned cars looking for cans of dog food (just watched season 2 episode 2 of The Walking Dead) stick with me and we can learn how to feed ourselves together. Effing zombies!
